If you were given an apple, what would you think of?
Gravity?
A work of art?
What does a simple apple have to do with IB in high school?
In this activity, teachers in the middle school of junior high School took "One Apple" as the theme to guide students to explore the subject knowledge behind an apple.
Part.1
An interdisciplinary course on Apple
Chinese literature
As an "image", apple represented "temptation", "wisdom", "knowledge", "dream" and "beauty" in literary works. The literature teacher Tao Xia led the students to read a poem about kaempferia composed by a poet of the Southern and Northern Dynasty named "Kaempferia" (an ancient name for apple), and a long non-fiction novel Red Apple written by Mr. Wu Dianbin.
English
Most of the colors we know about apples are red, yellow, and green. Have you ever seen a white apple? English teacher Michelle led the students to explore the image of "white apple" in an English work White Apple. The white apple can represent the metaphor of "death". The description of the white apple in the poem reveals the author's sad mood in the face of the death of his relatives. At The same time, apple is also reflected in many English proverbs, such as: The apple of my eye; One bad apple spoils the whole barrel; one bad apple spoils the whole barrel; An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
economics
Apple can be regarded as a commodity in the market in economics, economics teacher Liu Qi, through the form of role play, led students to understand the different perspectives of "consumers" and "producers", the pricing of apple prices in different market environments will be different. Lead the students to understand the supply and demand model and market equilibrium in the economy.
Business management
In business management, Apple as the birth of the brand of iPhone, Apple computer and other electronic products are familiar, then in the brand promotion, what is the role of the brand slogan? Business Management Miss Suwen Wong gave a lively introduction to Grade 9 students through the display of several brands and their slogans. Let us know that the "Apple" brand slogan is not as impressive as the product itself.
Environmental systems and society
What do we do with leftover apple remains? Do you throw it in the trash? Or is it classified? Or is it burning residue? Mr. Brian from Environmental Systems and Society led the students to explore the advantages and disadvantages of the three treatment methods, and made them realize that the environment is closely related to our life, and how to achieve harmonious coexistence between people and the environment is the core of IBDP environmental Systems and society research.
organism
As we all know, apple as a kind of food, which is rich in nutrition is very diverse. So what are the nutrients? How does it help our human body? Through vivid language, Ms. Tao Yuan, the biology teacher, led the students to understand the rich iron, manganese, calcium and vitamins in apples, which can not only help people prevent colds, but also reduce the probability of Alzheimer's disease. At the same time, the teacher also led the students to understand the best time to eat apples from a biological perspective.
mathematics
The shape of an apple is similar to that of a sphere. If you want to carry an apple outside, how much wrapping paper do you need to wrap the apple? How much room do you need for an apple?

Part.2
Group inquiry
After the teachers' introduction of "an Apple", the Grade 9 students started their teams' exploration of "an object". Students can choose any object they are interested in, explore how it relates to the various subjects at IBDP, and how they can apply their knowledge to think about the object or its meaning.
Below are excerpts from the students' discussion.
The first group
Select object: Cell phone
Mobile phones and Economics:
We often buy a new mobile phone to replace the old one in daily life. If the replaced old mobile phone enters the market and becomes a second mobile phone for sale, the price of the sale will be several percent lower than the previous price, which contains the market principle of economics.
Cell phones and Math:
The binary in mobile phone code is an extreme use of mathematics. Through binary numbers, we can complete many operation instructions through programming, to achieve a variety of software functions.
Mobile phones and Art:
Cell phones and cell phone cases are an important way for us to distinguish ourselves from others. The art of cell phone cases has also become a fashion among young people. A variety of mobile phone cases reflect a variety of artistic ways and forms, thought-provoking.
The second group
Select items: Face masks
Masks and the Economy:
When the epidemic first broke out, the price of masks was so high that it was hard to get a mask. The price of masks with low unit price also increased several times unprecedentively. However, when the epidemic became normal, the demand and supply of masks gradually balanced, and the price of masks gradually returned to the normal market price. This is reflected in the economic market supply and demand relationship.
Masks and Science:
Although the production method of the mask is simple, there are some processes that are worth noting, such as the selection of non-woven fabric, stitching of binding, multi-layer treatment, and so on, how to strictly meet the needs of physical isolation and so on. Different wearers should pay different attention to the treatment of masks. Wearers for patients and wearers for ordinary people in different ways.
Masks and Art:
By showing the appearance of masks before, during and after use, the group showed that the masks were complete and intact when they were first taken out of the packaging. However, we often used masks in nucleic acid and going out frequently, and then hastily rolled them up and put them in our pockets. When we went out again, we unfolded the folded masks again. The team reflected the implied social meaning through the changes of masks, which was thought-provoking.
The third group
Select object: Light
Light and Literature:
The team chose an article called "Light," which tells the story of a swimmer, Junzi, who saves a woman frightened by a rainstorm, only to be hit on the scalp and lose blood, and analyzed the symbolic meaning of "light" in it.
Light and English:
Light can mean bright or light. There are many words related to light, such as lightning, lighthouse, lighthearted, etc. If you understand the meaning of light, you can understand many related English words.
Light and Art:
Monet's works reflect a lot of light and shadow relations, it can be seen that in artistic creation, the grasp of light and shadow is very important. Light has also become an important element in many works of art.
Fourth group
Select object: Student A's little finger
Little Finger and Literature:
Student A's little finger is different from that of normal people. It is born with certain bending defects. There are few literary works with little finger, but many of them reflect how to face the differences in body, gender and personality between people, as well as the concepts of eliminating discrimination and pursuing equality advocated in literature.
Little Finger and Humanity:
Modern people have become accustomed to the life of mobile phones. But after too much use of mobile phones, our right pinky thumb appears a certain bend, reflecting the impact of the environment on the human body.
Little Finger and Science:
The pinky deformity may be genetic, or the embryo may have been exposed to external influences in the mother.
After the activity, the Senior High School also had the honor to invite Rachel, who graduated in the class of 17. She shared her three-year study experience in Liangfeng Bilingual High School and gave you a lot of advice on study and life.
Through this project-like activity, some of the students' doubts and concerns about high school life were removed. The students all said that they benefited a lot, and they also had more certainty and expectations for the new semester. Having experienced the interdisciplinary charm of IBDP for the first time, they showed their enthusiasm for disciplinary exploration, and their spirit of seeking knowledge won the thumbs up from teachers in senior high school. Teachers and students have agreed - we meet again in September!
